Two Party System
May 3 2007, 4:38 PM EDT I think that there is a serious flaw in the two party system. There are two dominant parties, and several smaller parties (who we can choose to vote for, but we all know that they're not going to win--- although I think this might be a good third party year since there are so many candidates that people are generally indifferent to)... tangent. In any event, we vote for a President, and then we get the VP and whatever else comes along with him. If we vote for the "guy" (because that's what it is) who is not elected, then our vote doesn't count. Really. It doesn't. We voted, we got nothing for it. Same goes for our representatives in the House and Congress. I like the "proportional representation" used by several European countries, where your vote does count. You vote for a party (not the person) and your representatives are sent to the government (parliament, whatever) based on percentages of the vote. In many countries, the President has little or no power and is essentially a figurehead (which is the way it should be, particularly in America where we're so polairzed that only about half the country elects the president anyway). 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

You might consider it. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

May 3 2007, 7:13 PM EDT "And many of these countries allow just about anyone to immigrate. You might consider it."It's not about whether or not other countries allow immigration and/or moving to another country. It's about improving the government of the country we live in. That's like telling poor people to get a job. Instead of systemically attempting to fix the problem, we ignore it, runaway from it, or look for a temporary fix. I was stating an informed opinon, whereas your response is nothing but an ignorant and ill-informed suggestion. Do you find this valuable? |
