edwards and cfr

a friend of mine told me about who all was members of the council on foreign relations. Kerry, Edwards, former Pres. Bush, Cheney, Clinton ,Bolton ect. ect. I'd like to know how members from both parties that supposedly have entirely different views on U.S. policy are members of this same group. I'm a democrat but I would like to know more about this.
